Introduction

2010 Trench Fantasy Football

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a professional sports team and truly value the entire game … not just the all-stars … then Trench Fantasy is for you!

Much like traditional fantasy sports, real athletes and their real-life performances are used to generate points for Trench Fantasy Football (TF). However, TF is focused on the overlooked aspects of the game as well as real team play … unit by unit … and puts you in the Coach’s seat and in the trenches where the game is decided.

In TF, your league can have up to 10 teams that follow a unique scoring method which values unit play of real NFL teams. We’re not ignoring the "skill positions," – far from it. There’s a reason that successful QBs and RBs give linemen expensive watches and cars. There’s also a reason that 65% of the 1st round NFL draft picks over the past few years have been trench players … the guys who are the foundation of their team’s success. Similarly, Trench Fantasy recognizes that the success of the 7 or 8 players that typically touch the ball is dependent upon all 53 guys on their team. Yes, there is no “I” in Trench Fantasy.

You and your fellow team owners hold a draft to fill your fantasy roster with real-life NFL team units — Offensive-Line, Defensive-Line, Defensive Secondary, Defensive Special Teams, Punting Unit, Kicking Unit and Kick-Off Squad. The statistics your units generate in their real-life games are collected, and fantasy points are awarded based on these numbers. The better your units perform, the more fantasy points accrue for your fantasy team.

Each week throughout the regular season, you will set your lineup based on how well you think your units will perform that week. Ultimately, these points determine which teams enter their fantasy playoffs.

The Commissioner

The Commissioner of a Fantasy Football league is responsible for coordinating and managing the league. Individual private league commissioners will be responsible for resolving any disputes that arise between league owners regarding rules, trading, or other issues. Trenches, Inc. will serve as the Commissioner for Trench Fantasy public leagues.

Leagues

You can create a Custom League and personally invite only those players or “team owners” you want to join. As the league Commissioner, you can configure virtually all aspects of your league, from the scoring system to the style of draft.

To join someone else's Custom League, you must get the League ID and Password from the Commissioner.

If you don't have enough Team Owners to build an entire league yourself, join our Trench Fantasy Public League or our Trench Prize Leagues and compete against other fantasy fans.

Live Draft Leagues or Automated Draft Leagues

Your Trench Fantasy Football team will acquire its units through a draft. Trench leagues can draft units via an Online Live Draft, an Automated Draft or a Manual Draft. In Online Mode you use the Draft Manager to control the draft. During the Live Draft, all participants in your league ("owners") will log in to an on-line "draft room" at a scheduled time. Each owner, in draft order, has just 90 seconds (subject to Commissioner customization) to select an available NFL unit for his or her team. You can use the Draft Manager if all league owners are sitting in one room, or located throughout the world. This has the advantage of allowing everyone to participate live regardless of their location.

You may prefer to participate in an Automated Draft league where you will arrange units in advance of the draft, using Rank Lists in the order that you'd like those unit selected for your team. The Automated Draft is then processed using your lists. The highest-ranked unit on your lists who is available, and fits the roster needs of your team, will be selected for you during each round of the automated draft.

In Manual Draft mode you enter the results of the draft after the actual draft has completed. This keeps track of who was drafted in what round.

Public league members will select a roster from all NFL teams.

Commissioner (Private) Leagues, Public Leagues, or Trench Prize Leagues

If you know all the owners who are going to be in your league, or you want to recruit individuals, you may want to join or create a Commissioner (Private) league. The Commissioner who creates a Private league will have the ability to control certain league functions and specify certain customizable parameters during league set-up. All Private leagues can have up to 10 participants, or team "owners." Team owners can be notified to join their league and set up their teams via e-mail from the Commissioner.

The Trench Public League is open to all eligible participants and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Public league play is individual, and your team is ranked based on total points against all Public league members. Trench Prize Leagues are also available. For a fee, individuals may join a Trench Prize League and play in a season-long commissioner-style league, with a prize awarded to the Trench Prize League winner.

League Joining Deadline

After you become a Registered User, you may join a league anytime up to 11:59 PM ET on September 7, 2010. The first day of the NFL season is set for September 9, 2010. In order for your league's season to start with the first day of the NFL season, you must sign up by 11:59 PM ET on September 7, 2010 and your draft must be started by 11:59 pm ET on September 8, 2010. There will be no drafts held between the first day of the season, September 9, 2010 and the first Sunday of the season, September 12, 2010.

Draft

Live Draft Instructions

After you join or create a Live Draft league, you will have the opportunity to make changes to Trench's default Rank List, which is a list of all NFL units that are eligible to be drafted, ranked from best to worst by our Trench Fantasy experts.

It is recommended that prior to your draft, you organize the Rank List according to your own unit preferences. However, you are welcome to leave the Rank List in the order our experts have provided. During the live draft Trench Fantasy will use your Rank List as a backup in case your time limit expires before you make a pick.

On draft day proceed to the Draft section of your League Home page. During the Live Draft, each team will have a fixed time period set by the Commissioner (from 30 seconds to several minutes) to select an NFL unit. The order of the draft will be specified by the Commissioner before the draft following a serpentine process where the Commissioner specifies the order in which teams will select, and then the draft proceeds in a serpentine order (team picking first in 1st round will pick last in 2nd round).

In the draft room, you will be able to place NFL units into a Draft Queue - which is simply a list of units, in order of priority, that you are interested in taking with your next draft pick. When it is your turn to pick, you will have a fixed time (typically 90 seconds) to draft a unit. If the 90 seconds pass and you have not manually selected a unit, the unit ranked highest in your Draft Queue will be automatically drafted. If the Draft Queue is empty, a pick will then be made from your Rank List. In such a case, the highest rated unit from the Rank List will be drafted unless that position is filled - in which case the next best available option, at the next highest Ranked position, will be drafted. The draft order will "snake" at the end of each round, meaning that the team with the last pick in the current round will have the first pick in the next round.

Waiver priority immediately after the draft will be the reverse order of the first round of the draft. Team #10 will have the highest waiver priority and Team #1 the lowest waiver priority.

You'll find more help with the Live Draft in the Help Center inside your league after signup.

Automated Draft Instructions

As with a Live Draft, after creating or joining an Automated Draft league, you will have the opportunity to rank all the eligible NFL units. You may manipulate the rankings however you choose. You will rank the units in the order of your preference, with the unit you'd most like to draft being #1 on a list, and so on.

As in the Live Draft, you are not required to make changes to the Trench Fantasy rank lists. If you choose not to, our default lists will be used. However, if you decide to organize the lists yourself, you will have up until the start of your draft as initiated by the Commissioner to do so. When your draft begins, the rank lists will be closed and considered ready for the draft.

Waiver priority immediately after the draft will be first come first served.

Teams

Overview
Each Trench Fantasy Commissioner or Trench Prize League Football league will consist of up to 10 teams, divided into divisions as specified by the Commissioner.

Each Trench Fantasy team will consist of 7 NFL units with one for each unit position and from 0 to 3 back-up units in reserve depending on the size of the league. Units are groups of players from a single team that fulfill key roles in offensive, defensive and special teams production. For example, the Offensive Line-run team refers to the entire unit of the field in achieving running game results. The Offensive Line - Pass refers to the unit’s ability to achieve passing game results. The Defensive Secondary refers to the performance addressing pass defensive specifically, and Defensive Line refers to the performance addressing the remaining elements of defensive play. Please refer to the
Scoring Guide for further details. Owners may select a starting lineup each week from these units. The chart below lists the required number of units at each position for the 'starting lineup' and the 'draft'.

*You are allowed as many as 7 units in your starting lineup, according to the positional requirements listed in the table above. However the numbers in the "starting lineup" column represent the maximum number of units you may have at each position.

** Team owners that elect to participate in a league with an 'Automated Draft' will have their rosters populated according to the criteria listed in the 'Roster Requirements' table. Units will be drafted based upon their order within each team owner's Rank List and position within the draft.

*** Team owners participating in a 'Live Draft' league will be required to select a total number of units based upon the criteria defined in the 'Roster Requirements' table above. Team owners may draft from 1 to 3 units for each position in leagues of 9 or 10 teams and 1 to 4 units in leagues of 8 teams or less.

**** Please note that, throughout the season, your overall roster is capped to a specific number of units at each position per the table above. Once the draft is over, you can carry, in reserve, as many or as few units within the cap at each position as you like. This is driven by the total available units in the NFL (7 units for each of the 32 NFL teams is 224 total NFL units).

Scoring

Point Values
Each week your team will compete against another team in your league in a head-to-head matchup. During a matchup, each of the units in your starting lineup ("active" units) for that week will earn points based on their actual statistical performance from NFL games. The
Scoring Guide lists the statistics and their corresponding point values.

Wins & Losses
For each head-to-head matchup, the team with the greater number of points will earn a Win and the team with the lesser number will earn a Loss.

During the regular season, if two teams have the same number of points, each team will get a Tie or be awarded the win in leagues based upon Commissioner defined league settings such as Highest Reserve Team Unit, Highest Starter Team Unit, or Total Reserve Points.

Regular season team rankings tie breakers may include Divisional Win-Loss, Head to Head Results or Total Points at the direction of the Commissioner during league set-up. During the playoffs, there are no ties. The tiebreakers for head-to-head matchups in the league playoffs can also be decided by Highest Reserve Team Unit, Highest Starter Team Unit, or Total Reserve Points as determined by the Commissioner during league setup.

NOTES

Statistics Corrections

Following the completion of each week's games, all statistics and point totals are verified, and corrections are made where necessary. However, all statistics and point totals for the week are considered FINAL as of 11:59:59 PM ET on the Tuesday following the week’s games. If a stat correction is announced for the previous week's games after 11:59:59 PM ET on Tuesday or later, it will not be included in our statistics and your official Trench Fantasy score will be based on the original statistic.

Rounding will NOT be used when calculating points from statistics. For example, 49 yards rushing will result in 4 points, not 5.

Please note: at the completion of the last week of games of the Trench Fantasy Regular Season (as defined below), all statistics are considered Final. Once playoff teams are announced, any statistical corrections that impact the Trench Fantasy regular season will not be included.

Supported Browsers
Trench Fantasy recommends that our players use updated versions of their browsers, as certain functionality may not be available on older browsers. At the minimum, Trench Fantasy requires the following:
Firefox v3 or higher
Internet Explorer 7 or higher
Google Chrome v5 or higher
Safari v4 or higher
Opera v10 or higher

Schedule & Playoffs

Regular Season
For Trench Prize Leagues, the first 13 weeks of the NFL season represent the regular season for Trench Fantasy Football leagues (the "Trench Fantasy Regular Season"). Each team will compete with all other teams in the league on a total points basis.

For Commissioner (or “Private”) Leagues, Commissioners have the option of establishing a season based up to 17 weeks of the NFL season which then represent the regular season for their Private Trench Fantasy Football league (the "Trench Fantasy Regular Season"). Commissioners have the option of specifying the week the Trench Fantasy Playoffs by determining of the “Regular Season Length” length. For example, for a 13 week regular season, the playoffs start on the 14th week of the NFL season. During the regular season, league schedules will be structured based on the configuration your Commissioner has chosen. When the draft is complete, you can see your team's specific schedule by clicking the Schedule link under the League Tab.

The Public League season consists all 17 NFL weeks.

Playoffs
In Commissioner and Trench Prize Leagues, when the regular season ends, the Trench Fantasy system will create the playoff match-ups including rounds and seeding as specified via Commissioner choices for the league duration and divisional structure.

If there is a tie for the order of playoff seeds or division lead, the following tie-breakers can be used at the direction of the Commissioner during league set-up:

  1. Divisional Win-Loss
  2. Head to Head Results
  3. Total Points

For teams that do not qualify for the playoffs, the season will effectively end. No further add/drop transactions will be permitted for any team that does not make the playoffs, or for any team that is eliminated from the playoffs.

Lineup Changes

Weekly Lineups
Each week, owners have the opportunity to select their starting lineup for the coming week. If an owner doesn't set a lineup before the weekly lineup deadline (explained in the "Deadline to Change Status" section below), the owner's lineup from the previous week will be used. If an owner has an incomplete lineup, their team will score zero points for the unspecified units.

Deadline to Change Status
An owner may change the status of the units on his/her team (i.e., "active" or "reserve") as specified by their Commissioner during league setup. Trench Fantasy will not be responsible if your watch or clock and our system clock are not synchronized. Trench Fantasy’s system clock will mark the official time for all deadlines.

Adding and Dropping Units

Free Agents
Throughout the season you may want to improve your roster by adding available free agent units and dropping units who are not performing up to your expectations. You can submit a free agent request at any time. With the exception of requests for units on Waivers (discussed below) free agent moves are first-come, first-served and are executed immediately.

Specific league rules may set limits to the number of Add/Drops you can request. Commissioner leagues may set transaction fees at their discretion. Trench Prize Leagues have no transaction fees.

Waivers
To provide an equal opportunity for all owners to add units to their roster, a Waivers process is used. Requests for units that are on Waivers are not executed immediately, but are put in a pending status.

The Waiver process allows multiple teams to request the same units. Trench Fantasy will process all of the pending requests based on the Waiver Rank of each team. Any unit that is new to the unit pool will be placed on Waivers, and subject to the league's Waiver process.

Waiver Rank
During the waiver process, pending transactions are processed in an order determined by each team's waiver rank. The team with a waiver rank of 1, considered the highest, will get its first requested unit. After the transaction is executed, the team's waiver rank is then set to 10 (last), and all other teams move up one. The waiver ranks are reset once each week after standings are updated on Tuesday morning. The last-place team (based on won/lost record) will be given the waiver rank of 1, down to the first-place team, which gets the waiver rank of 10. We'll use the following criteria to break any ties for waiver rank:

Waiver Rank Tie Breaker

  1. Worst Win/Lost Record
  2. Least Points Scored YTD
  3. Most Points Scored Against YTD

If a team's highest pending transaction becomes invalid because another team received the requested unit, the transaction gets deleted and the team's next waiver request, if one exists, becomes that team's highest. If a team doesn't have any pending transactions because all units requested were taken by other teams, or the owner simply didn't request any units, there isn't any penalty and the Waiver Rank will not be changed for that week.

Waiver Schedule
The waiver period will begin either on Wednesday evening at 8PM EST or at Thursday Noon EST depending on the Commissioner setup.

Preseason
Once a league's draft is completed, units can be added and dropped subject to the Free Agent and Waiver rules discussed above. The initial Waiver Rank after the draft will be the reverse of the Draft Order. After the draft, all units not drafted will be placed on Waivers.

Trades

Trade Approval Process
In an effort to ensure fair competition and to prevent collusion among team owners, a trade approval process is used. After two owners agree to a trade, the trade may be put in a pending status. Trade approvals can be handled several ways at the decision of the Commissioner during league set-up including:

  • Commissioner handles and approves all Trades
  • Owners Vote where trades can be voided if an agreed number of team owners object
  • Owners Propose/Accept/Trade without Restrictions

If you make a trade offer, be sure to monitor the status of that offer as the weekly lineup deadline approaches, to ensure that acceptance of that trade does not cause your team to have an illegal lineup for the current week's games.

All trades between owners must be made before the first game day of the week in order to be effective for the current week.

Multi-unit Trades
Owners can enter unbalanced multi-unit trades such as a 3 unit for 1 unit trade. A trade that results in an illegal roster will be allowed, however you will be required to enter the necessary transactions to correct your roster before your lineup is due for the coming week.

Sportsmanship

General Sportsmanship
By participating, you agree to abide by the general sportsmanship rules set forth in these rules and our Terms of Use. You further agree to accept and abide by the rulings and the decisions of Trench Fantasy regarding all questions of sportsmanship. If an owner does not comply with the sportsmanship rules as defined in these official rules or the Terms of Use, or Trench Fantasy determines (in Trench Fantasy's sole discretion) that an owner has acted in an unsportsmanlike manner, Trench Fantasy reserves the right to disqualify the owner, remove that owner from the league (in either the Private League or Prize League), or terminate the entire Private league, at its sole discretion. In the event that Trench Fantasy terminates a Private league for violation of these rules or our Terms of Use, there will be no refunds of any kind. All decisions by Trench Fantasy in sportsmanship and related matters will be final.

Multiple Teams
In order to keep the Commissioner and Prize leagues as competitive as possible, owners will only be allowed to have one team in a league. If Trench Fantasy determines, at its sole discretion, that two teams in a league are owned by the same person, or being operated under the instructions of the same person, Trench Fantasy may disqualify the owner and/or remove the owner from the league.

Collusion
Collusion is expressly prohibited in our leagues. If Trench Fantasy determines, at its sole discretion, that two or more owners in the same league have worked together to better one team at the expense of the other (for example, making one-sided trades, one team dropping highly-rated units so the other team can pick them up, etc.), Trench Fantasy may disqualify the owners and/or remove the owners from the league.

Inappropriate League Communication

The Fantasy and League Message Boards, League News area, League Email Address and Chat Room are available for you to communicate with other league owners. We ask that you refrain from posting or sending messages that could be construed as offensive or harassing to other owners. If a team owner is unable to abide by the guidelines specified in the Trench Fantasy Terms of Use, Trench Fantasy reserves the right to terminate that team owner's ability to communicate within the league and/or remove that owner from the league.

Trench Prize Leagues

The Trench Fantasy offers leagues (“Trench Prize Leagues”) where individuals may pay an entry fee to play in a season-long, commissioner-style league for a first place cash prize.
Leagues will consist of six teams in one division, with head-to-head play during the season to generate a win-loss record. The top 2 teams go to a one-week playoff to determine the winner of the Trench Prize League. Rules specific to each league are found in the rules section of the league.

Upon entry, an automated draft date is provided. Players will have the opportunity to adjust their pre-draft rankings for their team, which will determine the results of the automated draft. Upon completion of the automated draft, players will have their initial starting line-ups set based on the results of the draft. Players have the option to change teams in their starting lineup prior to each week, including week 1 of the Trench Prize League. Trades and Waivers are allowed in Trench Prize leagues, with Trade Control determined by a league vote.

Starting Lineup
Your starting lineup must consist of all 7 Trench Fantasy Positions. In Trench Fantasy, your starting lineup consists of team units, not individual players. For example, the Denver Offensive Line Pass or the Tennessee Defensive Line. In all Trench Fantasy Leagues, starting line-ups may not include more than 4 team units from the same NFL team in order for Trench Fantasy to remain consistent with the definition of fantasy football games and contests of skill versus chance.

Here are the Trench Fantasy Team Units:

  • Offensive Line – Run
  • Offensive Line – Pass
  • Defensive Line
  • Defensive Secondary
  • Defensive Special Team/Return Team
  • Punting Unit
  • Kicking Team

Reserve Team Units
In addition to a starting lineup, reserve team units are available to move into the starting lineup. Leagues may have 1 or 2 reserve units per position depending on the specific league rules.

Available Team Units
The draft pool consists of all 32 NFL teams at each of the 7 Trench Fantasy positions, for a total of 224 potential team units to play. Players may choose to add or drop or trade units from their teams, subject to specific league rules.

Modify Team Overview
To modify your team via the Internet, click the appropriate navigational link on the Trench Fantasy website, login using your user email and password (if you haven't already done so), modify your starting lineup as needed, submit the modifications.

The number of modifications you may make are limited in Trench Prizes leagues, are specific to each Trench Prize League’s rules.

Deadlines and Stat Week
During the Trench Prize Leagues, modifications must be made before game time of the team units being modified.
The team units will be frozen once their respective game time has started.

Bye Week Switch
A bye week switch occurs when you replace a team unit from your starting lineup whose team has a bye with a team unit from your team whose team doesn't have a bye. Bye week switches are unlimited during in Trench Fantasy Leagues, including Trench Prize leagues. and must involve team units listed at the same position.

Modify Team Costs
There are no fees for modifying your team.

Scoring Overview
Statistics are accumulated each week for all team units in your starting lineup using the standard Trench Fantasy scoring system.
Scoring System

To determine standings, teams are placed in head-to-head weekly matchups of the respective starting lineups. The team with more Trench Fantasy points at the end of the week earning a win. The team with the fewer Trench Fantasy points earns a loss. The teams with the two best Win-Loss records at the end of the season time frame will face head-to-head in a playoff one week after the Trench Fantasy regular season ends. Tie-breaker rules are specific to each league, and are found in the league rules for each league.

In the event that any game is postponed or canceled for any reason and the game is not played on or before the following Wednesday, players on the teams in the postponed/canceled game will receive no stats for that week.

Results Overview
To determine standings, teams are ranked based on Win-Loss record. Tie-breaker systems are found in each league’s rules.
Team, league, division, and overall reports are updated on the website each Tuesday (see statistics corrections, above) and reflect statistics through the previous weekend's games.

Prizes Overview
Trench Prize Leagues offer a cash prize. Prizes are awarded at the end of the Trench Prize Leagues season to winning team of the Trench Prize League.
In the unlikely event of a tie, prizes are divided evenly among those who have tied. Tie-breaking methods such as coin-flip and other ‘chance’ options are not used in Trench Fantasy because this is a game of skill, much like all other fantasy football leagues.

Entry
To enter Trench Prize Leagues via the Internet, you must complete the registration and entry forms available at the Trench Fantasy website. There is no limit to the number of paid entries per individual, although an individual may have only one team in a given league. All Internet entries must be paid by credit card, using MasterCard, VISA, American Express, or Discover, and must be registered for a league with a draft time no later than 8 AM ET, Sunday, September 12, 2010.

Game of Skill
The Trench Prize Leagues and all Trench Fantasy games are games of skill. Winners are determined by the objective criteria listed on this website. From all entries received, winners are determined by the individuals who use their skill and knowledge of relevant professional football information and fantasy football rules to accumulate the highest point totals or winning records during the Trench Fantasy season according to the official Trench Fantasy rules.

Trench Prize League Term
